3 Reasons Never to Daisy-Chain Extension Cords

  1. It creates a fire hazard Every extension cord has a maximum amp rating. Plugging one cord into another forces the first cord to carry the combined load of everything plugged into both cords, which can cause overheating and fire.

  2. The second cord is unprotected If the first cord has a built-in breaker, it cannot protect the second cord from overload. The added length also increases resistance and voltage drop, making the setup even more dangerous.

  3. There is no safe limit Daisy-chaining is inherently unsafe. If you need more length, buy a single cord rated for the load. If you need more outlets, use a power strip with a circuit breaker—but never plug that into an extension cord either.
