The album was originally scheduled for December 1997 but was delayed four months. Robert Del Naja repeatedly deconstructed and rebuilt tracks during recording sessions.

Recording took place over 1997 and early 1998 at multiple studios. Del Naja’s perfectionism caused the extended timeline.

Mezzanine finally released on April 20, 1998, through Circa and Virgin Records. The delay was entirely due to Del Naja’s obsessive reworking of the music.
