The LEGO brick was patented in 1958. The patent has long since expired. Any company can make a brick that interlocks with a LEGO brick. And many do. But the standard — the clutch power, the 0.2 millimeter tolerance, the ABS plastic that resists deformation — has never been matched at scale.
The brick’s dimensions were not arbitrary. The height-to-width ratio (5:6 for a standard brick) was chosen to optimize the number of combinations. The stud diameter was set so that when a brick is placed on top of another, it stays connected but can be separated by a child’s hands. The 0.2 millimeter gap between bricks is the result of thousands of iterations. Too tight and the bricks can’t be separated. Too loose and the structure collapses.
What is remarkable is not that LEGO designed a good brick. It’s that they refused to change it.
The LEGO System of Play — the idea that every brick produced is compatible with every other brick ever produced — was radical in 1955 and remains radical today. It means that a brick made in 1965 will fit a brick made in 2025. It means that a child can combine a pirate ship set from 1989 with a Star Wars set from 2023. It means that bricks are not disposable — they accumulate, compound, and become more valuable over time.
This decision — absolute backward compatibility — is the opposite of the planned obsolescence practiced by most toy manufacturers. It is also the reason LEGO survived the video game era, the tablet era, and its own near-bankruptcy in 2003.
The brick teaches something profound: that creativity does not require infinite novelty. It requires a stable platform. The brick does not change. What children build with it does.
